Calendar Girls the play, presented by Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society (SODS)

When Annie's husband John dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an 'alternative calendar', with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

Fool’s Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.

FOOL’S PARADISE

Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US

The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)

Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)

The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the

ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy

melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie

Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance

between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was

Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in

which the two central characters dance through Paris.

Topping the bill is Christian Reilly who at the age of 15 joined a band to get laid. The Salvation Army had different ideas! He became an integral part of the Perrier award-winning show Otis Lee Crenshaw and the Black Liars, with comic/songster Rich Hall and travelled the world 3 times. Now as a solo performer he both captivates and amuses his audiences with his comic songs and witty punch-lines.

 

Opening the night will be comedian and radio presenter Steve N. Allen, who has appeared on BBC2's ‘The Mash Report’. With his amusingly witty anecdotes about the world of radio and his failed attempts at romance, he keeps the audience laughing out loud.

 

Completing the line-up is the unique Mark Row, with his funny anecdotes and genuine insight into the education system!

 

Compere for the night will be the amiable and modest Alex Hylton who captivates the room with his mix of one-liners and laid back anecdotes.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Revival)

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024–25 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live broadcast of Rossini’s effervescent comedy on May 31. Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina headlines a winning ensemble as the feisty heroine, Rosina, alongside American tenor Jack Swanson, in his Met debut, as her secret beloved, Count Almaviva. Moldovan baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky stars as Figaro, the ingenious barber of Seville, with Hungarian bass-baritone Peter Ka´ lma´ n as Dr. Bartolo and Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio rounding out the principal cast. Blue’, a show paying tribute to the illustrious and wide-ranging music and career of Neil Diamond returns to The Regal, Stowmarket on Sunday 5th October 2025, with extra songs and an updated version of the show.

Celebrating 59 years since his first hit single and sales of over 130

million records, the show features hit after hit from Neil Diamond’s

career, including Sweet Caroline, Cracklin’ Rosie, Forever in Blue Jeans,America, I Am… I Said, Hello Again, Beautiful Noise, You Don’t Bring MeFlowers, I’m a Believer, Love on the Rocks and many more.

Stephen, who has been performing professionally for almost 20 years,

pays homage to Neil Diamond’s vocal range, guitar playing and heartfelt stage presence along with his backing singers in a show, jam-packed with timeless songs and ballads from Diamond’s solo releases and as a songwriter for some of the world’s biggest artists and groups.
